CHAPTER FOUR

If he had thought more about it, he wouldn't have allowed himself to become so easily swayed by Diana's passion. It was after moments such as that which occurred in her room that he was at his weakest and felt his fears were not justified. But she did seem to grow distant from him at other times and it was the worry and fear about this that sparked his concern.

Over the next couple of weeks, as the time for mid-terms approached, she seemed to be growing into two different people right before his eyes. At given moments, when they were alone at his apartment, she would almost attack him with a wild, craving lust that came near to frightening him. One weekend they made love seven times in less than two days and he was finally too exhausted to go on, though she gave every impression of being able to continue.

That was the girl he loved and felt comfortable with. But at other times and increasingly more often, she would almost be in another world around him, not really listening to him, not really all there.

Her visits after class and to her office with Lamia Abaddon had gotten longer and more frequent and though it seemed insane to think so, he almost felt as if the woman had put her under some kind of spell. She would talk quite a lot about the stunning, mysterious woman and her eyes would grow filmy and distant when she spoke of her.

Howard could not put his finger on what was happening, it was all too strange and unreal to him. He found himself hating the thought of Lamia Abaddon and he dropped out of her class just before mid-term, unable to bear watching Diana become so enthralled with the woman each time she was near her.

One afternoon he was waiting for her in the bar. He had been there for a couple of hours already and as a slow, agonizing hour went by, he could not help getting drunker and drunker on the scotches he was drinking. He was putting them away at a brisk pace, his anger growing hotter and hotter, his fear building wildly from his heart to his loins.

He was terrified of how she would be when she finally arrived. Something deep in his guts told him that the change that came over her was soon going to be complete. Almost as if he could see it coming, he felt the overwhelming fear that soon he would be cut out of her life completely.

"Where have you been," he hissed urgently when she finally arrived. "Must I always wait here like some slave while you merrily do what you want? I don't like being treated this way, Diana, I don't like it at all!"

"I was talking to Lamia," she answered defensively, the dislike for his anger and prodding apparent in her voice. "I have the right to talk to somebody if I want to, don't I, Howard?"
